A Smarter Home with IoT
Ive always liked sensors, and being able to create a cluster of them working together in my home, im able to make the home smarter than ever. this is one of those IoT (Internet Of Things ) projects that you can make aswell!

For the nitty-gritty details of setting up the ESP8266, I recommend checking Adafruit’s extensive guide. They’ve put together a fantastic tutorial that covers the hardware components and programming required.
The Construction
When assembled, the unit might appear larger than necessary, allowing space for future modifications. Feel free to swap out or add components as your needs evolve. Here’s what you’ll need:
- ESP8266: $2
- DHT22 (temperature and humidity sensor): $3
- Battery Case: $1
- 1000 uF Capacitor
- 1 x 10k resistor
- Enclosure: $2 (Available at hardware stores)
- 3.3v Voltage Regulator (XC6203E332PR)
- Wires
- Alkaline Batteries (2700 mAh rating)

Voltage Regulation: A Crucial Component
I selected the XC6203E332PR Low-dropout regulator, obtainable on eBay for about $2 for a set of 10. Initially, I experimented with other regulators and buck converters but found them to draw too much current for a long-lasting battery operation. The XC6203E332PR, with its minimal 4uA current draw, became the perfect solution.

Battery Life: A Calculated Approach
With three AA batteries (2700 mAh), this device can function for at least a year before a battery change. If you prefer, rechargeable batteries are also an option.
A conservative calculation considering battery efficiency, sleep mode, and actual ‘on’ time gives us an estimated runtime of around 364 days. But under favorable conditions, this could stretch to almost 593 days! And with static IP configuration, you might even achieve better efficiency.

Once built, you can create multiple units to monitor various locations in your home. Whether discreetly tucked away or stylishly mounted, these sensors will provide real-time data to make your living space smarter.
